Waste matters, excluding food waste, reusable waste and large waste matters such as furniture, should be packed in standard plastic garbage bags called 쓰레기봉투 “sseuregi bongtu”, which are designated depending on each district . You can buy these garbage bags from any local store in your district, and the most important information is the name of each district printed on these bags, and they come in various sizes(5ℓ, 10ℓ, 20ℓ, 50ℓ, 100ℓ). Fill the garbage bag, tie the top twice in the shape of a cross and leave it in any designated disposal area.
Inside apartment complexes, communal food waste bins are provided so that the residents of the apartments can dispose their food waste together. In the case of a private house, villa or a one-room, residents can buy a food waste bin to dispose of food waste individually. Markets sell a specific sticker each month to attach to the waste bin, costing 140 won per every 3L or 280 won per every 6L. Food waste is collected every day in Gwangju, except on Sundays. You can put a food waste bin out in a street and then the waste disposal team will empty the bin’s content.
Boxes or containers are equipped in specific places of apartment complexes, so they collect recyclable materials that people dump. In the case of private houses, residents should sort recyclable materials by types (plastic, plastic wrap, paper, glass and/or can), put them into a plastic bag and take the bag out of the house on a day designated for each district. If recyclable materials are mixed with general waste, the bags will not be collected.
The Beautiful Store 아름다운가게
It is a new kind of living movement that lengthens the lives of used items and reduces waste by recycling old items with new owners. Items that are donated are sold at the Beautiful Store, after classification and price measurements are decided. Allowable items are clothes, living goods, books/records, kitchen utensils, brown goods, small furniture, sporting goods and more.
Freecycle aims to reduce the amount of trash and to familiarize the concept of reuse and recycle among the community. Twice a year at the Gwangju International Center, freecycle is held and anyone is invited to take part in.
Large Waste Items
Waste that cannot fit into standard waste bags, such as furniture, electric home appliances, bedding, office machines and air conditioners, should be collected separately. Every time each local center collects large waste matters, a waste disposal fee is charged, but the prices are different depending on the bag’s volume.
How to Dispose of Large Waste Items:
- 1. Notify the local Gu-office (visit or by phone).
- 2. The Gu-office will confirm the collecting date and issue a sticker.
- 3. Put stickers on pertinent item and put the item outside your house.
- 4. The Gu-office will collect the item. For more info please click:( http://eclean.gwangju.go.kr )
