Performance and Exhibitions
There are many performing places where you can watch play, concerts, musicals, or operas in Gwangju, the City of Arts & Culture.
Gwangju Culture & Art Center (광주문화예술회관)
It is located in Unam-dong, Buk-gu. The place is a cultural space and has the largest concert hall in Gwangju. It is divided into the grand theater and the small theater. The grand theater is designed to be a balcony system proscenium stage that acts out the spectacular atmosphere. As Gwangju’s main performance hall, the Center regularly hosts new events (including major shows, plays, musicals, concerts, etc). Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall (광주비엔날레전시관)
From September to November, the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall hosts the Gwangju Biennale (even-numbered years) and the Gwangju Design Biennale (odd-numbered years). This is the biggest exhibition in Gwangju.

Gwangju Museum of Art (광주시립미술관)
They run various work in arts exhibits and art creation studios, special exhibitions of the Ha Jung-woong collection, art classes for children, kids, youth and adults, class of liberal arts, hobbies, language and conduct weekend experience program with families.

Uijae Art Gallery (의재 미술관)
An intersection of art and nature, the Uijae Art Gallery honors ‘Uijae’ Hur Baek-ryeon, the great master of Chinese painting. Born in 1891, Uijae depicted the beautiful scenery of Gwangju and the Jeollanam-do area, and, along with other artists, formed the ‘Yeonjinhoe’ association, crowning Gwangju the City of Art. The building’s architecture – 6,000 square-meters, with 3 levels (1 underground and 2 above) – gracefully blends the works of Uijae with the landscape of Mt. Mudeungsan. It received the 10th grand prize at the Korean Architecture and Culture Awards.

Woo Je-gil Art Museum (우제길 미술관)
Next to the Baegopeun-dari is the studio and art gallery of the famous Korean abstract artist, Woo Jegil. This artist, devoted to mold making to describe the fantastic world of light, was awarded the most popular artist prize at the first Gwangju Biennale.

Bitgoeul Citizen Cultural Center (빛고을시민문화관)
They offer original and diverse cultural events. You can rent concert halls, practice rooms, and exhibit halls by paying fees. They designate every Wednesday as ‘culture day,’ so you can get a discount or go for free to national cultural arts centers.

Kumho Gallery (금호 갤러리)
It is a small gallery located on the first floor of Shinsegae Department Store and exhibits various subjects.

Donggu Culture Center (동구 문화 센터)
Swimming, and health, as well as a variety of language, culture, and musical instruments classes for the community are available here.

It is a place of education to honor the noble spirit of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement and to teach the right history to future generations. It is a place where you can hear, see and experience the history of the Gwangju Democratization Movement and enjoy various performances.
